British Airways is going back to Tanzania. From 29 May 2027, BA will fly non-stop from London Gatwick to Kilimanjaro International Airport three times a week, in a little over nine hours. For anyone planning a climb or a safari from the UK, these British Airways flights to Kilimanjaro are the most useful aviation news in years.
Right now, no airline flies direct between the UK and Tanzania. Almost every client we bring out connects somewhere, usually Doha, Dubai, Nairobi or Addis Ababa, and the connection is often the most tiring part of the whole trip. This route removes it.
Below is everything confirmed so far: dates, schedule, fares, the aircraft, and the one quirk of the routing that will catch people out if they don't plan for it.
British Airways Kilimanjaro flights: the confirmed details
BA announced the route on 17 September 2026 as part of its summer 2027 schedule. The flights are on BA's schedule and appearing on ba.com, but they are not yet operating, and the route is currently scheduled as a seasonal service.
Route: London Gatwick to Kilimanjaro, on to Zanzibar, then Zanzibar back to London Gatwick
Days: Monday, Thursday and Saturday from Gatwick
Outbound: departs Gatwick 09:05, lands Kilimanjaro 20:20 local time, lands Zanzibar 22:25
Return: departs Zanzibar 00:25, lands Gatwick 07:55
Season: 29 May to 31 October 2027
Aircraft: Boeing 777 with Club World (business), World Traveller Plus (premium economy) and World Traveller (economy)
Fares: from £849 return including taxes
It is also BA's first scheduled service to Tanzania since it withdrew from Dar es Salaam in 2012. The difference this time is that it lands where our clients actually need to be.
How the London Gatwick to Kilimanjaro triangle route works
The aircraft does not come back the way it went. On the way out it stops at Kilimanjaro and continues to Zanzibar. On the way home it leaves from Zanzibar. There is no British Airways flight from Kilimanjaro to London.
For most of our clients this is no hardship at all. It is the shape of trip most people already want: do the hard work on the mainland, then finish on the beach. You land at Kilimanjaro, climb or go on safari, take a short domestic flight across to Zanzibar, and fly home from there.
If you don't want a beach finish, you still need to reach Zanzibar or route home through a hub with another airline. At the time of writing, BA has not made clear whether it will sell a Kilimanjaro to London ticket that stays on the same aircraft through Zanzibar. Until it does, plan on starting your journey home in Zanzibar.
You also cannot use the BA aircraft as a domestic hop. BA does not appear to have the rights to sell the Kilimanjaro to Zanzibar leg on its own, so the crossing to the island needs a separate domestic flight. We book that as part of the trip.
Why a 20:20 arrival suits a Kilimanjaro climb
Arrival time matters more than people realise. Land at 20:20, clear immigration, meet our team, and you are at the Maridadi Hotel in Moshi in under an hour. You sleep that night in a proper bed, two hours ahead of UK summer time, with no jet lag worth mentioning.
Compare that with a typical hub connection. Clients often land in the small hours after a long layover and start their pre-climb briefing running on empty. On a mountain where the way you start shapes the way you summit, that is not a small thing.
We always build in a full day in Moshi before Day 1 of the climb: kit check, briefing, a decent meal and early night. With a 20:20 arrival, that day becomes genuine rest rather than recovery from the journey.
One practical point. You will want working data the moment you land, for messages home and to reach our team. Set up an Airalo eSIM before you fly; code LEGEND10 gives 10% off.

The 00:25 departure: the booking mistake to avoid
The flight home leaves Zanzibar at 00:25. Your ticket will show Tuesday, Friday or Sunday. In practice, you are flying on Monday, Thursday or Saturday night.
This catches people out on every after-midnight departure in the world. They book their hotel up to the date printed on the ticket, then turn up at the airport a day late. The rule is simple: your last hotel night is the night before the date on your ticket.
Book a late checkout or a day room for that final day. You land at Gatwick at 07:55, which is early enough to be home for lunch.
Do the BA flight dates match the best time to climb Kilimanjaro?
Largely, yes. The 29 May to 31 October window covers the long dry season, June to October, which is the most reliable climbing period on Kilimanjaro. Trails are firmer, skies are clearer, and summit nights are cold but settled.
It also covers the Great Migration in the northern Serengeti, which typically reaches the Mara River between July and October. Zanzibar is in its dry season for most of the same months, so the beach finish works too.
What it does not cover is January to March, the other main climbing window and the calving season in the southern Serengeti. For those dates, you will still be connecting through a hub unless BA extends the route.
Two edge cases to watch. Late May is the tail of the long rains, so the first departures suit people who are relaxed about a wet day or two on the lower slopes. And if you are travelling in late October, confirm your return flight exists before you book anything else, because the route is currently scheduled to end on 31 October.
Fares, cabins and baggage on British Airways Zanzibar flights
The £849 headline fare is the cheapest seat on the route, and BA describes it as including a generous hand baggage allowance. A Kilimanjaro duffel will not fit in an overhead locker. Budget for a fare with a checked bag from the start.
BA's Gatwick 777s typically carry 32 Club World seats. The route runs straight through the UK school summer holidays, so if you want business class in July or August, book early. If you collect Avios, expect roughly 33,000 one way in economy off-peak and 99,000 in Club World, rising at peak dates.

What about Air Tanzania flights from London?
Air Tanzania announced plans in May 2026 to fly from London Gatwick to Kilimanjaro from July 2027, with at least three flights a week and Zanzibar to follow. As of BA's announcement in September, those flights were not on sale.
If Air Tanzania does launch, it means more seats and more competition on direct flights from the UK to Tanzania, which is good news for everyone. Until tickets are actually on sale, I would not build a trip around it.
Planning a 2027 Kilimanjaro climb around the BA schedule
The flight days are fixed, so it makes sense to fit the itinerary to them rather than the other way round. Here is how an 8-day Lemosho climb with safari and beach works from a Thursday departure:
Thursday: depart Gatwick 09:05, land Kilimanjaro 20:20, transfer to Maridadi Hotel
Friday: rest day in Moshi, briefing and kit check
Saturday to Saturday: 8-day Lemosho Route climb
Saturday night: back at Maridadi
Sunday to Wednesday: safari through Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti
Thursday: domestic flight to Zanzibar
Thursday to Saturday: beach
Saturday night: 00:25 flight home, landing at Gatwick 07:55 on Sunday
That is 17 nights door to door. Shorter versions work too: a climb-only trip still needs a way to Zanzibar, so we would usually add at least one night on the island rather than fight the routing.
Our advice is to agree your climb dates with us first, then book flights. Seats on a three-times-a-week route will go faster than on a daily one, so don't leave it long.
Frequently asked questions
Does British Airways fly direct to Kilimanjaro? Yes, from 29 May 2027. BA will fly non-stop from London Gatwick to Kilimanjaro International Airport on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, before continuing to Zanzibar. The flight takes around nine hours and 15 minutes. It is the first direct service between the UK and Kilimanjaro on any airline's schedule.
When do British Airways flights to Kilimanjaro start? The first flight departs Gatwick on 29 May 2027, and the schedule is already showing on ba.com. The route is currently scheduled to run until 31 October 2027 as a summer seasonal service. BA has not yet said whether it will continue beyond that, so check before booking anything for November onwards.
Can I fly home from Kilimanjaro with British Airways? Not directly. The route is a triangle, so the flight home departs from Zanzibar at 00:25 and lands at Gatwick at 07:55. Most of our clients finish their trip on Zanzibar anyway, using a short domestic flight from the mainland. If you don't want time on the beach, you will need to route home through Zanzibar or connect with another airline.
How much are British Airways flights to Kilimanjaro? Return fares start from £849 including taxes, but that is the lowest available fare with hand baggage only. Climbers need a checked bag for their duffel, so expect to pay more. Premium economy and Club World fares are higher, and seats in the school summer holidays will go first.
Is Air Tanzania flying direct from London? Air Tanzania has announced plans to fly from London Gatwick to Kilimanjaro from July 2027, with Zanzibar to follow. At the time of writing those flights were not on sale. I would treat it as a plan rather than a booking option until tickets are available.
Is the BA flight good timing for a Kilimanjaro climb? Very good. You land at 20:20 local time, reach your hotel in Moshi within the hour, and wake up with no meaningful jet lag, since Tanzania is only two hours ahead of UK summer time. That gives you a properly restful day before the climb, which helps acclimatisation and morale from Day 1.
From Jack
Every trip I have made to Moshi has involved a connection somewhere, usually at an hour nobody would choose. Being able to leave Gatwick after breakfast and be in Moshi the same evening changes how people start their climb, and I think it will change how many people from the UK decide to come at all.
