PORTER WELFARE AT LEGEND

Nobody summits

Behind every Legend climber is a crew of porters, cooks and guides. We pay them properly, kit them out properly, and let someone else check that we do.

CREW MEMBERS BEHIND EVERY CLIMBER

They carry the tents, the food and the water. On too many climbs, they also carry the cost of a cheap price.

They carry the tents, the food and the water. On too many climbs, they also carry the cost of a cheap price.

Low pay, overloaded bags, thin jackets and nowhere to sleep are still common on Kilimanjaro. We built Legend to run the other way. And it’s not charity: a well-fed, well-kitted crew is the same crew that gets you to the top and back down safely.

WHERE THIS COMES FROM

Jackson started out carrying the bags.

Jackson started out carrying the bags.

Our co-founder Jackson Masanja began on Kilimanjaro as a porter. He knows what 20 kg feels like at altitude, and what a fair day’s pay means to a family in Moshi. Porter welfare isn’t a policy we bolted on. It’s where Legend started.

CHECK 01

They talk to our crew

Questionnaires and interviews with our porters about how each climb went.

CHECK 02

They check the pay

How and when wages are paid, so every porter gets the full amount, on time.

CHECK 03

They follow the tips

A review of our tipping process, so your thank-you lands where you meant it.

CHECK 04

They come on the climb

KPAP investigative porters audit partner climbs and report back. Yours could be one.

CHECKED BEFORE EVERY CLIMB

The crew manifest.

Seven things every porter, cook and guide on a Legend climb gets. No exceptions, no small print.

A fair wage, paid in full

Paid in full and on time after every climb. No deductions for food, transport or “registration fees”.

Loads under 20 kg

Every bag is weighed at the gate. Too heavy? We hire another porter. We don’t ask anyone to carry more.

Three proper meals a day

The crew eats the same food, in the same quantity, as the climbers. Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

A tent and a mat every night

Nobody sleeps in the mess tent or under a rock. Everyone gets a sleeping tent and a proper mat.

Kit for the summit, not the street

Anyone without the right clothing is kitted out from our gear store: waterproofs, layers, boots, gloves, hats.

Care when things go wrong

A sick or injured porter is escorted down and given medical care like any member of the expedition, at our cost.

Tipping you can see

A named crew list and one clear recommendation, $300 per climber, handed over in person in front of the whole team.

We pay above the KPAP-recommended minimum wage, in full and on time after every climb. No deductions for food, transport or "registration fees".

Loads under 20 kg

Every bag is weighed at the gate. If it's over, we bring up another team member, not a heavier load.

Three proper meals a day

Hot, high-calorie meals and plenty of tea, every day of the climb. Proper fuel for carrying a load at altitude.

A tent and a mat every night

Nobody sleeps in the mess tent or under a rock. Everyone gets a sleeping tent and a proper mat.

Kit for the summit, not the street

Anyone without the right clothing is kitted out from our gear store, free of charge: waterproofs, layers, boots, gloves, hats.

Care when things go wrong

A sick or injured porter is escorted down and treated, exactly as a climber would be. At our cost.

Tipping you can see

KPAP audits our tipping, so the team you climb with receives every penny of your tips, straight after the climb. We recommend $300 per climber.

TIPPING, DONE PROPERLY

Asante sana.

Asante sana.

‘Thank you very much’ — and on summit day you’ll mean it. On plenty of climbs the tip goes to the head guide and never makes it down the line. On ours, you get a named crew list before you start, and the money is handed over in person, in front of the whole team, on the last day.

PORTER FAQS

What climbers ask us.

What climbers ask us.

The questions we get asked most about our crew. Anything else, WhatsApp us and a real person answers.

The questions we get asked most about our crew. Anything else, WhatsApp us and a real person answers.

Do I need previous climbing experience?

No. Kilimanjaro is a trek, not a technical climb, with no ropes or climbing gear required. We've guided first-time hikers to the summit. What matters most is steady pace, mental readiness, and time to acclimatise, which our 6–9 day routes are built around.

What's the best route for a higher success rate?

Longer routes acclimatize better. The Lemosho and Northern Circuit routes (7–9 days) have the highest summit success rates because they give your body more time to adjust to altitude. We'll help you choose the right route for your fitness, schedule, and risk tolerance.

How fit do I need to be?

You don't need to be an athlete, but you do need a baseline of cardiovascular fitness. We recommend months of hiking, stair climbing, or cardio training beforehand. The mountain rewards steady endurance over raw strength.

How much should I tip, and who gets it?

We recommend $300 per climber, shared across your whole crew: guides, cook, porters and camp team. KPAP audits our tipping, so the team you climb with receives every penny, straight after the climb. It's always your choice, and wages never depend on it.

Are your porters paid fairly?

Yes. We pay above the KPAP-recommended minimum wage, in full and on time after every climb, with no deductions for food, transport or “registration fees”.

How heavy are the porters' loads?

Never more than 20 kg. Every bag is weighed at the gate, and if it's over, we bring up another team member rather than load anyone more heavily.

What about altitude sickness?

Our guides are trained to monitor symptoms daily and carry supplemental oxygen and medication on every climb. Choosing a longer route and climbing slowly, pole pole, is the single best defence against altitude sickness.

Is tipping really necessary?

It's not legally required, but it is the primary income for your crew and deeply embedded in the culture of the mountain. We build fair tipping guidance into every trip so you arrive knowing exactly what's expected and why it matters.

What is KPAP, and what do they check?

The Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project is an independent organisation that checks how porters are treated. As a KPAP Partner for Responsible Travel, we're audited all year: they interview our crew, check our pay and tipping, and join real climbs.

What happens if a porter gets ill or injured?

They're escorted down and given medical care, exactly as a climber would be, at our cost.

Can I bring kit to donate to the crew?

Yes. Spare warm layers, boots and gloves go into our crew gear store, which is free for the whole team.
