Kilimanjaro Questions
What is the best time of year to climb Mount Kilimanjaro?
The best months are January to early March and June to October, when the weather is generally dry and clear. These windows offer the most comfortable conditions and the best summit success rates.
How fit do I need to be to climb Kilimanjaro?
You don’t need to be an athlete, but a good level of cardiovascular fitness, stamina, and mental resilience is essential. We recommend training with regular hikes, strength work, and endurance cardio 3–6 months before your climb.
What’s included in the climb package?
At Legend our goal is to have everything covered for you. From bespoke airport pick up, hotels, transport, single hotel rooms, the most luxury camp set up and guided by Jack and his team. Our package covers all of this. All you need to do is book your flights, get some insurance and bring some money towards any tipping you wish to give to our team.
Do I need prior climbing experience?
No technical climbing experience is required. Kilimanjaro is a high-altitude trek, not a mountaineering expedition. Our expert guides manage all safety aspects, and we prepare you fully in advance.
How do you handle altitude sickness?
We take altitude seriously. Our guides monitor you daily, and we follow a "climb high, sleep low" approach. Oxygen, pulse oximeters, and emergency evacuation plans are standard. If you happen to be affected by altitude sickness our team will step in and begin building a plan to help you recover and continue the climb. This looks like food and hydration plans, enforced rest and medical intervention. If symptoms deteriorate we have our evacuation plan in place to get you safely off the mountain.
Are porters and guides included? How are they treated?
Yes, our amazing team is included. Unlike most Kilimanjaro operators, we have our very own team dedicated to working for Legend. We are currently going through our KPAP assessment, this means already we are paying the highest wage level on the mountain, providing the team with three hot meals a day on the mountain and making sure they carry the correct weight in their bags on the mountain. Our team are the heartbeat of Legend and you will see how amazing and well looked after they are when you climb with us.
Which Kilimanjaro route is best for me?
Firstly, we always highly recommend taking the 8-day Lemosho route. The route offers the best chance to acclimatise and has the highest summit success on the mountain. If you need to spend less days away from home, we would recommend the 7 day Machame route or the 6 day Marangu route. We would highly recommend avoiding the 6 day Machame and 5 day Marangu routes.
What does camp look like with Legend on the mountain?
Everything we have designed at camp is built around increasing the chances of you making the summit. If you climb in our Legend package climbs, you'll have a large stand up tent and a cotbed with mattress and pillow. This is to increase warmth and give you more comfortable sleep through the climb. Toilets and showers come as standard at all our camps. The toilets are flushable and the showers are warm! Finally you will have our HQ tent. This is where we will hold meetings and eat all of our meals. We have lighting for these tents and a heater, so it is nice and cozy in the evening!
What kind of food will I eat?
You’ll enjoy fresh, nutritious meals prepared daily by our mountain chefs - hot breakfasts, hearty lunches, and delicious dinners tailored to your dietary needs.
Safari Questions
What should I pack for the Safari?
Essential items include comfortable safari clothing in neutral colours, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars, a camera, sturdy walking shoes, and any personal medications.
What is the best time of the year to go on safari?
You can go on a safari throughout the whole year in Tanzania. Although we highly recommend considering visiting in the dry season. This makes for easier game viewing and no to little rain to contend with. There are two dry seasons. December, January and February. Then June, July, August and September.
What food is provided during the safari?
All meals are provided. Both breakfast and dinner at the lodge and you will have a packed lunch whilst out on Safari. We tend to use the different picnic sites located in the National Parks.
What kind of vehicles are used for game drives?
We use our Legend 4x4 safari vehicles equipped with open roofs for optimal wildlife viewing and photography. Vehicles are comfortable and designed to handle the rugged terrain of the parks.
Will I have internet or phone access?
Most lodges and camps offer limited internet access, but it can be spotty. Mobile phone coverage is available in some areas but not guaranteed throughout the safari.
Can I combine a Kilimanjaro climb with a safari?
Yes! We have our very own dedicated safari team who can take you on safari after your climb. The safari would begin on the final day of your Kilimanjaro trip. We highly recommend choosing either a 1,2 or 3 day safari. You can find information on the safari choices on your Kilimanjaro route page. Feel free to message us to speak directly with founder and guide Jack Fleckney, to find out more.
Are safaris private or group-based?
If you booked a stand alone safari with us, it will be completely private. No sharing vehicles or hotels. If you choose to add a small safari after your Kilimanjaro climb, there is a high likelihood that you'll be joined by some of the team you climbed the mountain with. We limit a maximum of 6 people per vehicle and you will always have your own room at the safari lodge.
What kind of wildlife can I expect to see?
Northern Tanzania is home to some of the most iconic wildlife in Africa. On safari, you can expect to see the Big Five: lions, elephants, leopards, buffalo, and rhinos, especially in parks like the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. The region is also teeming with zebras, giraffes, wildebeest, cheetahs, hyenas, and an astonishing variety of antelope species. Bird lovers will be delighted by over 500 bird species, including flamingos, ostriches, and eagles. If you're visiting during the right time of year, you might even witness the Great Wildebeest Migration, one of nature’s most spectacular events. Each park has its own specialties, making every day on safari a unique and unforgettable experience. If you have specific wildlife goals, you can book a call with founder and guide Jack Fleckney, who can build a plan around your goals.

You can also message us directly via WhatsApp or book a personal call with our founder, Jack Fleckney, who will be happy to talk through your plans and answer any questions.
What’s your cancellation and refund policy?
We understand that life can be unpredictable. That’s why we offer a full refund if you cancel up to one month before your trip. If you face an emergency-even right before departure-we’ll still honour a full refund (minus any banking/transfer fees, typically 3%). We also offer free date changes if you need to reschedule your trip. Our goal is to keep things flexible, fair, and stress-free.
What’s the payment process, and what currency do you accept?
To secure your spot, you only need to pay a 10% deposit. The remaining balance can be paid in your own time, as long as the full amount is settled at least one month before your trip. We accept Pound Sterling (GBP), US Dollars (USD), Euros (EUR), and Australian Dollars (AUD). You’ll have your own login area where you can make payments whenever it suits you. 🧾 Tip: Paying by card incurs a 3% merchant fee. If you pay by bank transfer, we’ll donate that 3% to our Legend Foundation, which supports projects that benefit local porters on Kilimanjaro.
Do you offer airport transfers and hotel bookings?
Yes, all airport transfers and hotel accommodation before and after your climb or safari are included in your trip. If you’d like to arrive early or stay longer, we can arrange extra nights, and your transfers will still be covered.
Can you assist with visa information for Tanzania?
Absolutely. We’ll guide you through the visa process and send you all the relevant information and documentation you need. Our team is always available if you have questions or need help filling out the application.
What happens if my flight is delayed or cancelled?
We monitor all our clients' flights and are ready to adapt if things go off schedule. If your flight is delayed, we’ll adjust your pickup accordingly. In more serious delays, we may even be able to get you on the mountain mid-expedition via a designated entry point, as long as it's within two days of the original start date. If delays mean you can’t make your climb at all, we’ll offer you a free transfer to a future climb date,no stress, no penalty.
Is travel insurance required?
Yes, travel insurance is mandatory-and we strongly recommend choosing a policy that covers high-altitude trekking up to 5,985m, as well as emergency helicopter evacuation. It's an essential part of keeping you safe on the mountain.
Do you support solo travellers, families, or large groups?
Absolutely. Most people on our group climbs are solo travellers or pairs of friends, but we also offer private climbs and custom safaris for individuals, couples, families, or large groups. Whatever your preference, we’ll tailor the experience to suit your needs.
Why should I choose Legend over other tour companies?
We’ve redesigned the Kilimanjaro and safari experience from the ground up-using the knowledge of our founder, former UK military adventurer Jack Fleckney, to focus on safety, success, and unforgettable moments. All of our group climbs are led by our dedicated Legend team, supported by Western guides with high-altitude and medical training. Our porters and staff are not only paid the highest wages on the mountain, but are part of our extended family. We kit them out fully, support their families, and create a working culture you’ll feel a part of. And if that’s not enough, Jack personally oversees every expedition, and will be there to support you from the moment you book to the moment you summit.
