Kilimanjaro Clothing List: Layering Essentials
When it comes to clothing for Kilimanjaro, a layering system is key. Each day brings varied weather, from hot rainforest to freezing summit temperatures. Start with moisture-wicking base layers made from merino wool or synthetic fabrics. These materials keep sweat away from your skin and help regulate body temperature. Add a warm fleece or lightweight insulated jacket for extra warmth as you ascend. Top all layers with a waterproof, windproof jacket and trousers to protect against rain, wind, and snow. Avoid cotton, as it traps moisture and dries slowly, which increases your risk of getting cold.
Accessories should be selected for maximum protection. Choose insulated gloves (ideally a liner and a thick pair for summit night), a thermal hat that covers your ears, and a neck gaiter or buff for sun and wind protection. This flexible system of layering allows you to add or remove clothing easily as conditions change, ensuring comfort from the trailhead to the summit.

Best Footwear for Kilimanjaro
Your boots matter! For Kilimanjaro, hiking boots should be waterproof, insulated, and offer high ankle support for safety and comfort. Make sure your boots are well broken in before the trek. Pair boots with thick wool or synthetic hiking socks and change socks daily to keep feet dry and reduce friction. Sock liners can help further reduce blisters, especially on longer trekking days. After hiking, swap into comfortable camp shoes or sandals to let your feet recover. Bring spare socks for all conditions; healthy feet mean a happier climb.

Sleeping Gear for Kilimanjaro
A good night’s rest is crucial for acclimatisation and enjoyment. Choose a sleeping bag rated to -10°C (14°F) or lower, and add a light silk or synthetic sleeping bag liner for extra warmth and cleanliness. Legend Expeditions supplies comfortable sleeping mattresses and cot beds, so no additional sleeping mat is necessary. A pillowcase is provided, but you can also make your own pillow using spare clothes or a down jacket. For chilly nights, fill a water bottle with hot water; our team provides these on every climb.

Trekking Poles
Trekking poles are highly recommended on Kilimanjaro. Adjustable poles provide stability on uneven terrain, help balance during rocky or muddy sections, and reduce knee and thigh fatigue, especially on the long descent. Practise with trekking poles before your trip for the best experience.
Lip Protection
The sun, wind, and dry high-altitude air can quickly cause chapped lips. Protect your lips with a high-SPF lip balm, ideally SPF 30 or higher. Reapply regularly, especially on summit day when the sun and wind are strongest. Small comforts like this help ensure an enjoyable climb.
Sun Hat
A sun hat is essential for protection against Kilimanjaro’s strong, high-altitude sun. Opt for a wide-brimmed hat or one with flaps to cover your ears, face, and neck. Find a hat that fits securely for windy conditions on the mountain.
Buff or Neck Gaiter
A buff or neck gaiter is versatile and invaluable. It keeps dust out of your mouth and nose on lower trails and provides warmth and wind protection during summit night. Lightweight, breathable, and easy to adjust, a buff is a must-have for all Kilimanjaro routes.
Gaiters
Gaiters prevent scree, dust, and small stones from getting into your boots—especially helpful on the challenging summit descent. They also add warmth and wind protection to the lower legs. Select lightweight, waterproof gaiters for the best fit.
Sunglasses for Kilimanjaro
Full UV-protection sunglasses (Category 3 or 4) are vital for eye safety. They protect your eyes from intense sunlight and wind, especially in the alpine desert zone and on summit day. Use a retainer strap to prevent losing them in high winds.
Headtorch
A bright, dependable headtorch is critical, particularly for summit night. Choose a rechargeable model and bring spare batteries or a power bank. Cold conditions will drain batteries quickly, so keep devices and batteries warm in your pocket overnight.

Daypack Essentials: Kilimanjaro Packing List
Your daypack should weigh 5kg or less and include at least 3 litres of water (hydration bladder or bottles), energy snacks, sunscreen, lip balm, sunglasses, a waterproof jacket or extra warm layer, and your headtorch. A small first aid kit, hand sanitiser, and toilet paper or tissues in a resealable bag are essential for comfort and hygiene. Organise everything in dry bags or liners to protect from rain or dust. On Legend Expeditions trips, we supply snacks and coffee stops en route, freeing you from the need to overpack food.
Summit Night Essentials
Summit night is the coldest, longest, and most mentally tough part of the climb. Bring hand warmers—activate before you set off. Insulated summit mitts or gloves are critical for warmth. Carry insulated water bottles as hydration bladders often freeze at altitude. Starting summit night prepared will help ensure a safe, successful summit push.
Power Bank
There’s no charging available on Kilimanjaro, so bring a 20,000mAh power bank to keep your devices running. Store it in an inside pocket to protect from cold, and set your phone to airplane mode when not in use to preserve battery life.
Duffel Bag
All your gear that you don’t need during the day goes in a duffel bag (60–90L). Porters will carry it between camps. On Legend climbs, your duffel is protected from rain and dust and clearly labelled for quick tent delivery at camp.
Frequently Asked Questions: Kilimanjaro Clothing & Gear
How cold does it get on Kilimanjaro?
Summit night temperatures can drop below -10°C (14°F). Proper layering is critical.
Do I need mountaineering boots for Kilimanjaro?
No, high-quality hiking boots are best for typical terrain.
Can I rent gear on the mountain?
Yes, we run our own rental company in Tanzania and can have all of your clothing and equipment ready for your arrival.
What does Legend Expeditions provide?
We supply sleeping mattresses, cot beds, and pillowcases, plus support from experienced guides throughout your climb. The only technical piece of gear you need is a good sleeping bag and your own clothes.
How do I keep batteries from dying in the cold?
Store electronics (phones, headtorch, power bank) in your sleeping bag or inside your jacket at night. Cold quickly reduces battery life, so avoid leaving devices in outside pockets or your tent vestibule.
Do I need gaiters?
Gaiters are useful, especially for the summit descent. They keep out dust, scree, and reduce the risk of debris causing blisters or discomfort.
What sun protection do I need?
Bring a wide-brimmed sun hat, high-SPF sunscreen, lip balm, and polarised UV-protection sunglasses. The sun is stronger at altitude and on exposed routes. How can I stop my water from freezing on summit night?
It can be very difficult to prevent water from freezing in cold summit conditions. We recommend filling your water bottles with hot water before setting off. Just ask our team, and we’ll take care of it for you. For summit night, we advise against using hydration bladders, as their tubes tend to freeze quickly in low temperatures.
If you do use a bladder, try blowing water back through the tube after each sip to help keep it clear. For bottles, store them upside down in or on the side of your bag. Since water freezes from the top down, this means you’ll still be able to drink from the bottom, even if some ice forms.
