Rau is a rare groundwater forest on the southern edge of Moshi. It isn't fed by rain but by water that has travelled underground from Kilimanjaro. That water keeps the forest green all year and supports more than 70 native tree species, including a giant African teak (Mvule) thought to be one of the oldest and largest in East Africa.

The walk itself is flat and shaded, and it's never far from the vehicle. Your guide will point out the black-and-white colobus and blue monkeys in the canopy, the birdlife and butterflies, and the sacred fig trees that the local Chagga community still treat with respect. It's the ideal gentle outing for an arrival day before the climb, or a slow morning after it.

What travelers say about Legend

"We had an incredible guide, Magoma. His knowledge of the wildlife was exceptional. He had an amazing ability to spot animals that we would never have seen ourselves, making sure we enjoyed unforgettable sightings, including lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, hippos, countless beautiful birds and even a glimpse of the elusive leopard. Magoma's enthusiasm, patience and warm personality made every game drive exciting, educational and great fun."

"This is the 2nd expedition I've completed with Legend Expedition. Jack and his team are amazing. Legend make the whole experience from enquiry through to delivery of the experience seamless."

"This was my second expedition with Legend Expeditions, and once again they exceeded expectations. From the very beginning, they ensured we had absolutely everything we needed. Their professionalism, empathy, and genuine care for each individual made a real difference throughout the trip."
