Ride onto Kilimanjaro

Most people only see Kilimanjaro on foot. On the Shira Plateau ride, you cycle up through the forest on the mountain’s western side and out onto the open moorland of the plateau, at around 3,800m, with Kibo filling the view on a clear day.

It’s a hard day with a long, fast descent, and it’s the ride we point strong riders to first. If you’d rather keep it gentler, there are seven more rides below, from coffee farms and waterfalls to Maasai villages and hot springs.

Forest to moorland

Climb from Londorossi Gate through montane forest into open heath.

The Shira Plateau

Ride out across one of the widest views on Kilimanjaro towards the helipad.

The descent

Turn for home and drop all the way back down to the gate.

Good to know

Not for most rides. The moderate rides suit anyone who’s comfortable on a bike. Shira Plateau and Materuni are harder, with long climbs on rough ground, so you’ll enjoy them more if you’re fit and used to riding off-road.

Talk to us before you book. It goes far higher than Moshi, so we’ll fit it in at the right point in your trip, whether that’s before or after a climb.

Yes. It’s just your group, your guide and a bike mechanic, which is why the price per person drops as your group gets bigger.

Mountain bikes and helmets are included on every ride. Tell us your height when you book so the bike is set up for you.

Comfortable sports clothes, trainers or cycling shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses and a light rain jacket. On the Shira Plateau, add warm layers and gloves, as it gets cold up high. Bring swimwear for the rides with a waterfall or hot springs.

Send an enquiry or message Jack on WhatsApp. We’ll confirm your date first, then send you payment details. Nothing to pay until it’s confirmed.
