The park almost nobody visits.
Black rhino, rare antelope and wide open plains under the Pare Mountains. Around two hours from Moshi, and often yours is the only vehicle.
Private safari · 2 to 4 days
Wild, empty, and genuinely different.
Mkomazi sits on the Kenyan border, far from the northern circuit crowds. It is home to one of Tanzania's most important rhino sanctuaries and a long-running wild dog programme. Come for the conservation story and the silence.

“Mkomazi is my favourite place to send people who want something nobody else has done. It is quiet, it is wild, and the rhino work there matters.”
Three reasons Mkomazi is worth the detour.

Black rhino, up close
Critically endangered and breeding again inside a guarded sanctuary within the park. You visit with the rangers who protect them.

Africa's rarest predator
Mkomazi runs one of the continent's longest wild dog breeding programmes, releasing packs back into the wild. Free-roaming dogs are a rare bonus.

Antelope you won't see elsewhere
Gerenuk and fringe-eared oryx are dry-country specialists that are hard to find anywhere else in Tanzania.

When to go
Dry season
June to October
Open bush, clear views and wildlife gathered near water. The easiest time to spot everything Mkomazi is known for.
Green season
November to February
Short rains turn the plains green and bring in migrant birds. A lovely, quiet time to visit.
The long rains
March to May
Heavy rain makes some tracks hard going. The sanctuary is still open, but we would usually suggest another month.

How we price
Estimate, not a final quote. This is an estimate based on high-season rates for each comfort level. Once we know your dates, arrival times and flight times, we send you an exact quote in writing, with your lodges confirmed at your chosen standard, before you pay anything. Park permits run for 24 hours, so your timings can change the final price, as can park fees, lodge rates and exchange rates. Hotel pick-up in Moshi or Arusha is included; airport transfers and extra hotel nights are added to your quote.
Check dates and get your quote
No payment now. Jack replies within 12 hours with an exact quote and your lodges confirmed.

How it fits your trip
Mkomazi is the shortest drive from Moshi, ideal for tired legs.
Rhino, rare antelope and the plains to yourself.
Fly from Kilimanjaro Airport. We book the hotel, flight and transfers.
Want the classics too? Pair Mkomazi with Tarangire and the Ngorongoro Crater for a week that covers both sides of northern Tanzania.
Good to know
Three lets you have a full rhino day without rushing. Two covers the essentials. Four adds a day deep in the park and a better chance of wild dogs.
Sightings in the sanctuary are near certain, but they are wild animals in a large fenced area, so no one can guarantee it.
There are no scheduled flights, so we drive. It is only about around two hours from Moshi.
It can be, but if you want the classic lion-and-elephant safari first, Tarangire or Ngorongoro may suit you better. Many guests add Mkomazi to one of those.
Yes. Your own Land Cruiser and the same driver-guide for the whole trip.
