Climb Mount Meru

Tanzania's second-highest mountain, and one of its most beautiful. Walk past giraffe and buffalo with an armed ranger, sleep in mountain huts, and reach the crater rim at sunrise with Kilimanjaro floating on the horizon.

3 or 4 days · Arusha National Park · Mountain huts · Perfect Kilimanjaro warm-up

01 · The mountain

Kilimanjaro's Wild Little Sister

Just 70 km west of Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru is steeper, wilder and far quieter. It's a brilliant climb in its own right, and the perfect warm-up for Africa's highest peak.

Meru is a dormant volcano at the heart of Arusha National Park. Its lower slopes are rich with wildlife, its upper slopes climb through forest and heather to a dramatic horseshoe crater, and the summit, Socialist Peak, stands at 4,566 metres.

The climb is hut to hut, with an armed park ranger walking alongside your Legend guide. Summit night follows the knife-edge crater rim, and the reward is one of Africa's great sunrises: the sun climbing out from behind Kilimanjaro, floating above the clouds.
