Tarangire, the Rift Valley and Ngorongoro

What you'll do

Our three day safari is the natural choice for travellers who want a proper safari without committing to a longer trip. You start in Moshi and head into Tarangire National Park, with its huge elephant herds and ancient baobabs, then climb up to the Manyara Escarpment for views across the Rift Valley. The third day takes you down into the Ngorongoro Crater, one of the great wildlife stages on earth, before a final relaxed night in Arusha.

The pace is steady rather than rushed, which is the way to enjoy this part of Tanzania. Each evening lands you somewhere comfortable, whether that is a tented camp inside the park, a luxury glamping setup on the edge of the Rift, or a peaceful lodge near Arusha. On day four we transfer you to Kilimanjaro International Airport, ideally on a later flight so you have time for a slow morning.

Day 1

Moshi to Tarangire National Park

We collect you from your hotel in Moshi and drive south to Tarangire National Park. The journey shifts the landscape from the slopes of Kilimanjaro to the open plains of the central rift, and by early afternoon you are inside the park. Tarangire's baobabs are some of the oldest living things you will ever see, and the elephants that gather around them are part of what makes this park feel so special. You will spot lions, zebras, giraffes and a wealth of birdlife. We pause for a picnic lunch in the park, then continue the game drive into the late afternoon. By evening you are at Tarangire Greenland Retreat, set inside the park, with dinner and a quiet sunset waiting.

Day 2

A Last Morning in Tarangire, Up to the Rift Valley

The morning begins with coffee at sunrise and a long, slow game drive while the park is at its most alive. Your guide knows where to find the herds at this hour, and you may catch lions returning from a hunt or elephants moving down to the river. After we leave Tarangire, we drive west and climb up to the Manyara Escarpment, the dramatic ridge above Lake Manyara. Your camp tonight sits high on the edge of the Rift Valley, with views that stretch for miles. There is time to settle in, take in the scenery, and enjoy dinner around the fire.

Day 3

Down into the Ngorongoro Crater

Today is the headline day. After breakfast, we drive across the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and descend onto the floor of the crater itself. Few places in Africa concentrate wildlife the way this one does. You will likely see elephants, lions, buffalo and zebras within the first hour, and there is a real chance of finding the rare black rhino, which has its stronghold here. We stop for lunch by the hippo pools, with the noise and movement of the pod alongside you. In the afternoon, we climb back out of the crater and drive to Tumbili Lodge in Arusha for your final night, with the gardens and resident monkeys waiting.

Your Last Morning in Tanzania

All good safaris come to an end. Take your time at breakfast, enjoy the gardens at Tumbili one last time, then we transfer you to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flight. As with our shorter trips, a later departure makes the morning more relaxed and gives you a chance to talk through everything you saw before you head home.

Jack kept in constant contact with me prior to me leaving the UK, whilst I climbed Kili and on safari, this level of communication was beyond my expectation! and we have kept in touch afterwards because I will certainly be going on another adventure with them! If I could give more than a 5 star review I would for Legend Expeditions!

I would whole heartedly recommend adding the safari package on to your trip. The knowledge of the Legend team on locating and explaining about the animals is second to none. The accommodation and catering were also excellent.
